The Rookie Class at Brouwersdam, Netherlands has been a success story for years. It’s a program for young kids to get close to the sport of windsurfing in an environment that motivates them to push themselves and to grow into experienced windsurfers. The proof of concept is riders like Dieter Van der Eyken and Maaike Huvermann who both have developed themselves in this ver same environment.
The Rookie Cup is a yearly event where participants of the Rookie Class and others can test out their skills in a fun competition setting.
Organiser Rick Jendrush reports;
“The 2021 rookie cup was another success. The wind didn’t really show, but that didn’t matter for the kids. They all had loads of fun which is the most important.
The day started with three slalom races. It was a close call between rookies “Max” and “Rens”. Rens had gone for an old school windsurfer for the race, but in the end, it was Rens who won with a bigger sail.
Right after, we started a freestyle competition. It was a battle between the rookie brothers “Max” and “Tom”. We did three eliminations, and even though it was a close call, it was Tom who won the contest.
The overall winner was also Tom who had the best average of slalom and freestyle results. The rookie of the day was “Thijs” who gave it all he had during the whole day fighting until the very last end.
This year’s prize was a year long rookie class membership, and it went to “Maud” who was on strong form and grew lots during the competition.
Well done to everyone. We had a great time.“
