HOW DO I BEST RIG MY SAIL?

Visit our “rigging guides” section for guides to rig up your sails correctly.

What freeride sail will fit best for me:

NCX. No cam racing:

  • Incredible top speeds
  • Easy handling
  • Large wind range
  • Later planing compared to the Turbo GT and Gator.
  • Needs 0.5 – 1.0 m2 sail size difference

Turbo GT:

  • Easy handling
  • Great stability with a good locked in feeling
  • Quick acceleration and planing
  • Generally lower top speeds than NCX

Gator:

  • Very fast planing
  • Instant acceleration
  • Full X-Ply – very strong and durable
  • Not as stable as the 6 and 7 batten monofilm construction of the Turbo and NCX
  • Lower top speed. Built for bump and jump
Does the SDM Lockjaw fit both SDM and RDM mast without adapter?

Yes, all Severne booms with SDM the Lockjaw boom head will fit both SDM and RDM masts without an adapter. Severne booms with RDM Lockjaw boom head will only work on RDM masts.

Can I use a non Severne mast in my sails:

All of our development, testing, rigging and tuning is done using Severne masts. We strongly recommend our customers to use SEVERNE masts. Our masts are designed with a specific Severne bend curve that remains one of the pillars of our rigs.

We don’t test the performance or bend curves of other masts, and can therefore not guarantee which performance or durability you can get out of your sail using a different brand mast.

We describe the curve of our mast as a Severne curve. The constant, hardtop or flex top curves that generic mast brands describe are based on measurements on 3 points. We measure our masts at 7 points minimum.

Can I use my old Severne mast on my new Severne sail?

Yes! We have maintained all bend curves for many years. We are constantly developing and making our products work better. Our current masts are lighter, stronger, and most likely have a thinner diameter than our previous generation masts. New model sails are developed on these masts, which will deliver better performance, easier rigging, and rotation.

What are the differences between the different RDM masts

RDM RED: This is our most high-end mast with an incredibly low weight to give you an extremely light feeling in the hand.

RDM Blue: This is our most popular mast. Slightly heavier than the RDM Red with extra durability thanks to the extra layer of fiberglass. Compared to the RDM Red it’s the best option for the combination of weight and durability in our range.

Gorilla G2: If both of the masts above are above your budget, the GorillaG2 is our best mast. Heavier than the RDM Blue, but with 2 years of unlimited warranty, it’s a mast you can trust in any kind of conditions.

Can I use the Cyclops extension with sails from before 2019?

Yes, you can. You will simply have to untie the noose of the handle and wire the rope through the pulleys instead of using the loop and go system.

Since you only will have to go through 2 pulleys you will still be faster in rigging than with our wave grenade extensions.

ARE HEAVIER SAILS STRONGER?

No.  Heavier sails are heavier

CAN YOU USE AN RDM MAST IN THE TURBO?

SEVERNE offers an RDM cam conversion kit that is compatible with the TURBO and the OVERDRIVE.  This enables you to change the characteristics of your sail.

Using a wave mast will be more durable, allows access to sails with cams to riders that only have a wave mast and may increase the knuckle for speed off the wind when speed sailing.  An RDM mast is usually softer. If the sail has a compatible mast option, it is advisable to use the longer option.

I HAVE A BROKEN BATTEN, HOW DO I FIX IT?

The first place to check is your retailer.  Battens are generally very easy to replace, especially with the connection systems we use in SEVERNE sails.  If this is not an option, the distributor for your country will be able to help further.

IS IT BETTER TO GET MY SMALLER WAVE SAILS AS BLADES, AND MY LARGEST ONE AN S-1?

We normally recommend sticking with 1 sail model.  The reason is that the geometry is different on the Blade and S-1, and it’s more difficult to get used to the different clew heights, etc.

SHOULD I USE AN RDM OR AN SDM FOR MY GATOR SAILS?

The smaller sizes (3.7 – 6.5) will have better performance with an RDM mast.  It will soften the feel and promote durability.  The larger sizes 7.0 – 8.0 will perform better on an SDM mast.  The power delivery will be smoother and the profile more balanced.

WHY ARE THE BATTEN POCKETS ON ALTERNATING SIDES OF THE SAIL?

It helps to make the sail more symmetrical in performance. Instead of having one side of the sail with ALL the battens and NONE of them on the other, we have alternated them so that there are battens on BOTH sides.

This stops one side of the sail from being flatter than the other.

WHY IS THE FREEK 5 BATTENS, NOT 4?

During the testing and development phase of the FREEK, we tested many 4 batten versions.  They either had no ducking stability and acceptable lift or good ducking stability but no lift nor explosive power (which is vital in all the new moves).  The 5 batten version had both.  Bucket loads of both.

One of the reasons to reduce the batten count is to reduce weight.  Extensive use of eM3 keeps the sail weight low and allows us to benefit from a 5 batten layout – super smooth power delivery, exceptional wind range, more shaping options, unmatched balance and stability when ducking and during manoeuvres.
