Exceptional Wave Sailing on the West Coast of Tenerife
Tenerife offered several closely spaced wave sailing sessions around the Christmas period in the winter months with some exceptional conditions with the arrival of the first winter swells.
A particular spot, that did not deliver a single day the previous winter, now had Severne rider Dieter Van Der Eyken as excited as a kid on Christmas day.
Capitalizing on favorable forecasts, Dieter called up a well-known videographer of the Canary Islands, Rafa Soulart, to capture the action from the land, and put together a mindblowing edit. Additional footage from the water was captured by Dieter’s Surf-Survival instructor Mehdi Allam (Oceanic Motion) on the third day. Mehdi swam out to the wave’s impact zone to shoot some unique high-class wave-riding angles.
A FEW WORDS BY DIETER
“My aim for this clip is to give you a look at what it feels like to be wave sailing out there, what the dangers are, and how I challenged myself to aim to keep pushing on that wave knowing the danger it has in case things do go wrong.
It’s a wave that breaks extremely close to the rocks and where a mistake usually gets paid in cash (broken gear) yet allows some of the best wave riding on the island. It’s an exercise of letting go of the fear of going to the rocks, trusting in your abilities yet keeping that common sense to not push too much past your limit to avoid an early exit in the session.
In the clip, I also have included guest riders like Julian Salmon, Matteo Iachino, Danny Bruch, and some of the local crew from here with whom I share these unique sessions. Big thanks to Severne for supporting this clip and my journey.”
