THE EXPERT OPINION ON WINDSURFING TWIN FIN, THRUSTER, OR QUAD

In the dynamic world of windsurfing, finding the best windsurf wave fin setup can make all the difference in your performance and enjoyment on the water. Wave windsurfing conditions vary extremely from one spot to another, and having the perfect fin setup will undoubtedly improve your performance and fun in the water.

As our riders Lina Erpenstein, Philip Köster, and Dieter Van der Eyken continuously sail different wave spots, they have the best windsurf wave fin setup well studied. Here is what they have to say about Twin, Thruster, and Quad setups.

PHILIP KÖSTER – THRUSTER AS THE PREFERRED CHOICE

WHEN SHOULD YOU RIDE A TWIN SETUP?

When the waves are 1-2m side/side on conditions, the loose feeling of the board makes it much more fun. You learn a lot about how to use the rails of your boards in turns.

WHEN SHOULD YOU RIDE A THRUSTER SETUP?

When it comes to speed and wave-riding, I think thruster is the best windsurf wave setup right now since I can use it in all sorts of conditions and it handles big waves well. Nice drive feeling before hitting ramps in strong winds.

WHEN SHOULD YOU RIDE A QUAD SETUP?

Only in the most perfect windsurfing wave down-the-line conditions.

LINA ERPENSTEIN – QUAD IS THE BEST WINDSURF WAVE FIN SETUP

WHEN SHOULD YOU RIDE A TWIN SETUP?

When the waves are mushy and not too big a twin setup can give you the looseness that you are looking for. The board will feel a bit more slidy compared to a thruster or a quad. Taking out one or two fins (compared to the other setups) also means less drag and more speed in your bottom and top turns.

WHEN SHOULD YOU RIDE A THRUSTER SETUP?

If you are used to sailing single fins this is probably a great way to start getting into multiple fins as it’s basically a single with some side fins added. Compared to a single fin it will give you some great advantages in the waves as you’ll have more control in your bottom turns and more grip in the top turn. Generally a thruster also has less drag than a quad, so if you feel like a quad is too slow it might be worth giving it a try.

WHEN SHOULD YOU RIDE A QUAD SETUP?

Personally, I think the best windsurf wave fin setup is quad because it gives me the perfect balance between the looseness of a twin together with more grip and control that come from the side fins. Quads are great in more powerful waves and when you’re powered up. If you’re struggling with pivoting in the top turn it’s worth trying out different positions and distances between front and rear fins. In general, having the fins closer together and further forward will mean more looseness and less grip,  whilst further apart and more backward will mean the opposite.

DIETER VAN DER EYKEN – VARYING CONDITIONS MEANS VARYING SETUPS

WHEN SHOULD YOU RIDE A TWIN SETUP?

Smaller waves and lighter wind with side, or side onshore conditions. It will allow you to turn a bit tighter and have less drag for faster planning.

WHEN SHOULD YOU RIDE A THRUSTER SETUP?

Bigger waves, better rail-to-rail transition, and wider turns. It will also help for more top-end speed for jumping for example since you have more grip under your back foot.

On strong winds in jump spots, it can work as a good step up from the twin fin.

WHEN SHOULD YOU RIDE A QUAD SETUP?

Works well also in smaller waves when powered up, will allow you a tighter turning circle than the thruster yet gives you more grip than a twin does. The downside is a bit more drag in the water so less top speed.

Federico Infantino scores massive Gnaraloo

Some sessions become legendary. When SEVERNE team rider Federico Infantino made his annual pilgrimage 1,000km north to Gnaraloo this October, the forecast was holding strong with a solid 20-second period swell on the cards.
