This year’s Gran Canaria world cup was a week-long windsurfing action reel covering wave, and slalom racing.

Not a single day was quiet during this year’s Gran Canaria World Cup. The first weekend delivered the near-perfect wave conditions we all see in magazine shots. Then followed three days of full-power slalom racing, only to have wave action return the following weekend to bookend an incredible event.

Nearly all podiums had Severne riders present. Amongst others, Daida Moreno won her 22nd Pozo title, and Blanca Alabau won her first-ever women’s slalom victory.
This year, there were some truly incredible feats by the Severne women’s team. Daida Moreno added her 22nd Pozo title to her list of victories in a true show of force against her rivals Sara-Quita Offringa, Lina Erpenstein, and her sister, Iballa Moreno.

Iballa had to retire with a knee injury paving the way for Lina Erpenstein to climb her way up to the podium after an early exit in the single elimination. The double elimination was comeback time for Lina, and she preyed on every opportunity to finish third.

In another great performance, Severne rider Blanca Alabau won her first-ever PWA World Cup by dominating the women’s slalom fleet throughout the whole event. Armed with years of high wind experience and countless hours perfecting her fin and foiling technique, this event was her time to step up.

Daring the hardcore chop you’ll usually find around Pozo, Blanca completed all races on the foil in an impressive show of strength and technique. To cap it off, this victory now puts Blanca ahead of the fleet on the PWA world ranking.

Injury update

Coming back from injury, the first day of the World Cup also was the first day that Philip Köster would hit the water.

With a taped-up foot, and with no prior training, Philip still scored a near-perfect first heat. Later on, it was clear that he still wasn’t at 100%, and had to settle with a ninth place. In the double elimination, however, Philip went on the war trail and got himself back up to fifth place with an incredible performance. Now, more rest and rehabilitation are on the schedule for Philip on his recovery path.

Also Iballa Moreno will be spending the next weeks recovering and getting back up to full strength.

MENS SLALOM

A consistent set of results put Matteo Iachino in third place throughout the whole event. And at times, within striking distance of second place.

Sadly, in the very last race, he was edged out by Pierre Mortefon and had to settle for fourth place.

Amado Vrieswijk, former freestyle world champion, has found devastating speed. He added multiple final wins to his score sheet but also had to settle with several early exits which severely pulled him down the rankings – putting him in seventh place overall.

YOUTH FLEETS

The grom fleet is getting stronger and more competitive by the year. Packed with small riders that pull most of the moves in the book, there is little room for error. There are no signs of the level plateauing either.

One of the groms on the forefront is Severne rider Sol Degrieck. At just 14 years old, she claimed clear victory with a combination of big forward loops and proper wave hacks.

The U19 was won by none other than local hero Liam Dunkerbeck ahead of team buddy Lennart Neubauer, who put in a solid performance, and Tobias Bjornaa. Liam would also go on to finish 17th overall in the main event, showing that he’s on an exponentially upward development curve.
