Philip Köster Dominates Nuclear Winds to Secure Eighth Pozo Victory

FIVE-TIME WORLD CHAMPION WEATHERS GEAR LOSS SCARE TO CLAIM FIRST 5-STAR TITLE SINCE 2022 IN 50+ KNOT CONDITIONS.

When the ocean turns nuclear and winds exceed 50 knots, only the most seasoned warriors thrive. At the 2025 PWA Gran Canaria Gloria Windsurf World Cup, Philip Köster reminded everyone why he’s earned his reputation as Pozo’s undisputed king.

Operating on 3.4m of SEVERNE BladePro power, Philip navigated through conditions that would break most sailors. The five-time world champion’s tactical superiority shone through when it mattered most, securing his eighth event victory at Pozo Izquierdo and marking his first 5-star triumph since 2022.

Performance Under Pressure

The final stages delivered drama that would test any competitor’s mettle. In the standard final against Marcilio Browne, Philip experienced what rarely happens to elite sailors; his rig was ripped from his hands mid-forward loop attempt. The brutal 50+ knot winds sent the German swimming for his gear while Browne capitalized with a massive 10-point pushloop forward.

This crash forced a Super Final, where Philip’s championship pedigree became evident. Within seconds of the green flag, he launched into a perfect 10-point pushloop forward, establishing immediate dominance and building an eight-point advantage. When Browne fought back with an 8-point pushloop and 9.38-point stalled double forward, Philip delivered the knockout blow – a 7.38-point wave ride with two minutes remaining.

Local Knowledge Advantage

What separated Philip from the field wasn’t just technical ability – it was experience refined through years of Pozo sessions. While many hunted ramps near the bunker, Philip deliberately positioned himself upwind toward the judges’ tower during low tide conditions. This positioning provided more scoring opportunities and demonstrated the local knowledge that only comes from growing up 100 meters from these waves.

The SEVERNE Setup

Operating in conditions where the top four sailors were fully lit on equipment ranging from 3.3m to 3.5m, Philip’s was down to his 3.4 BladePro – a size he almost never uses. Originally intended for storm chasing, Philip’s 3.4 delivered the goods to rotate through any move imaginable.

The full gear combo used throughout the full contest was Pyro 83 and BladePro 3.4 / 3.7.

Championship Mentality

Philip’s road back to the top hasn’t been without challenges. Following injury setbacks, this victory represents more than just another trophy – it’s validation of the relentless pursuit of perfection that defines both Philip’s approach and SEVERNE’s design philosophy.

The German’s ability to maintain composure after such a wipeout, then immediately respond with championship-level performance, exemplifies the mental fortitude required to perform at windsurfing’s highest echelon.

SEVERNE Team Performance

While Philip commanded the spotlight with his victory, the broader SEVERNE squad faced challenging conditions that tested every sailor’s limits. Dieter van der Eyken experienced a tough event, finishing 17th after securing fourth place at this same venue last year. The explosive conditions didn’t align with Dieter’s usual rhythm, though his experience in these waters remains invaluable.

Federico Morisio finished 25th in conditions that proved unforgiving for many competitors. The young generation showed resilience despite demanding results, with Lennart Neubauer and Takumi Moriya both finishing 33rd. Lennart’s clean pushloop forwards during the competition signal strong potential for future events.
