OBX-WIND 2025: the community gather on the Outer Banks

Wind, Speed, and Community on the Outer Banks

Another year, another successful OBX-WIND event on Cape Hatteras; SEVERNE Windsurfing North America’s brand manager Mike Burns and the crew at Ocean Air Sports delivered exactly what the sport needs.

The Pamlico Sound provided the perfect venue. Shallow water, consistent Outer Banks wind, and a setup that worked for everyone from weekend warriors to seasoned racers. The wind showed up when it mattered; 20mph building to mid-30s by the end of Race #2 in the Long Distance event. Sailors came back with adventure stories. Locals watched from their soundfront homes as the fleet battled down the startline.

Racing Built for the Masses

The Mega Slalom course layout deserves recognition. SEVERNE North America, Ocean Air Sports, and US Windsurfing collaborated on a design that spreads competitors across long first and second legs; no cluster at the start, and pure speed becomes part of race strategy. It worked.

The “Beer Race” remains a highlight. Light wind, small triangle course, and a party on the water when racing wraps. Laughs, new connections, and a low-pressure entry point for sailors not ready to step up to full competition. This is how you grow participation.

Freestyle Display

Friday’s expression session closed the on-water competition. Pros threw tricks close enough to shore to spray the sidelines. What made it work was seeing up-and-coming sailors riding alongside established freestylers; every landed move (and spectacular crash) got cheers from the crowd.

The sport needs this; experienced riders and groms sharing the same session, pushing each other.

Off-Water Events Matter

The giant raffle distributed trips, boards, sails, and gear rental vouchers for spots like the Gorge and Puerto Rico. The Halloween costume party with DJ Cindy Looper brought lights, dancing, and a costume contest. These details matter; they’re what turn a windsurfing event into a community gathering.

What OBX-WIND Gets Right

Perfect venue. Competition that works across skill levels. Family-friendly atmosphere. Most importantly, it’s a tool to grow the sport rather than just service the existing community.

SEVERNE has supported this event for years. Watching it grow and deliver what windsurfing needs makes the investment worthwhile.
